Coal based generation capacity commissioned across India in fiscal year 2020-21. In all 9 units in 7 plants were commissioned. During the same period, 730 MW of capacity was retired.

Unit 1 of the 4 x 270 MW Bhadradri Thermal Power Project in Telangana commissioned in Jun 2020 by Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL). Located at Manuguru in the Bhadradri Kothagudem district of Telangana, the project was awarded to BHEL by Telangana State Power Generation Corporation Limited (TSGENCO). This is the first unit to be commissioned at this project and work on the remaining three units has reached an advanced stage.

Unit 2 of Lara Thermal Power Plant commissioned and added to the Central Sector of WR states as per their allocation.

Unit-2 of BHADRADRI TPP has been commissioned and added to state sector of Telangana in Dec 2020.

Unit 2 of MEJA STPP has been commissioned and added to central sector of NR states as per their allocation in Jan 2021.

Unit-2 of GADARWARA TPP commissioned and added to central sector of WR states as per their allocation in Feb 2021.

Unit-2 of NEYVELI NEW TPP has been commissioned and added to central sector of SR states as per their allocation in Feb 2021.

Unit 3 of the 4 x 270 MW Bhadradri Thermal Power Project in Telangana commissioned in Mar 2021 by Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL).

NTPC starts commercial operation of Unit 2 of its (3 x 660 MW) Nabinagar Super Thermal Power Station located in Bihar's Nabinagar taluka at 00:00 hrs of 23 Jul 2021. The power station is operated under Nabinagar Power Generation Company Pvt. Ltd. (NPGC) - a JV between NTPC and Bihar State Power Generation Company Limited. Bihar will get 84.8% or 559 MW of the electricity and the rest will be allocated to Uttar Pradesh, Jharkhand and Sikkim.

NTPC adds Unit-2 of Tanda Super Thermal Power Station in Uttar Pradesh to its installed capacity. "Unit-2 of 660 MW capacity of Tanda Super Thermal Power Station, Stage-II (2 x 660 MW) has successfully completed the trial operation and consequently included in the installed capacity of NTPC Group from March 31, 2021," a BSE filing said. The coal for the power plant is sourced from North Karnpura Coal Fields. Source of water for the power plant is from Tanda Pump Canal on Saryu River.
