U.S. coal fired power plant closure announcements in 2017

Public Service Company of New Mexico, after extensive analysis of San Juan Generating Station in Waterflow, New Mexico found that the coal-fired power plant is no longer economically viable after 2022. 2 Units of 924 MW will be closed by 2022, 30 years ahead of schedule. In 2013, 2 other units of 924 MW were approved to be shut by 2017.

Detroit, Michigan based DTE Energy Co. announced it would retire the last of its 8 generating units at 4 plants by 2050. These include: all 4 units at Monroe (4x850MW), both units at Belle River (2x697.5MW), i unit at Marysville (1x150MW) and 1 unit at Harbor Beach (1x121MW). This is on the back of its decision last year to retire 8 units with a combined capacity of 3,355 MW.

City Utilities of Springfield MO, took the first step in retiring the James River Power Station. The board unanimously voted to shut down units 1 (22 MW), Unit 2 (22 MW) and Unit 3 (44 MW) permanently by Dec this year. Unit 4 (60 MW) and Unit 5 (105 MW) will be shut down within 2 years. Actual closure still needs approval from the Southwest Power Pool.

The Lansing Board of Water and Light (LBWL) will stop burning fossil fuels at its 155 MW coal-fired Erickson Generating Station by December 2025 and commit to specific clean energy investments, under a settlement agreement announced this day by Sierra Club. The agreement settles claims of Clean Air Act violations at LBWL’s Erickson and Eckert Generating Stations in Lansing, Michigan.

Luminant, a subsidiary of Vistra Energy, announced closure of its  Monticello power plant, one of Texas's largest coal-powered plants. The 1,800 MW plant will cease operations on 04 Jan 2018 and will result in loss of 200 jobs. "The market's unprecedented low power price environment has profoundly impacted its operating revenue and no longer supports continued investment," said Curt Morgan, CEO of Dallas-based Vistra,.

In a letter sent to the Montana Public Services Commission, Rocky Mountain Power says the 116 MW Hardin Generating Station - built in 2006 - has been bleeding money for the past three years and the company has decided to shutter it in the first part of 2018 if it cannot find a buyer. 30 jobs and almost a half-million dollars in tax revenue will be impacted.

Milwaukee-based WEC Energy Group announced it was closing the Pleasant Prairie coal fired power plant (2 units, 595 MW each) permanently in the second quarter of 2018 as the company moves to cheaper natural gas and other energy sources. The power plant employs 158 people and the company said it will try to keep many of the employees by redeploying them to other facilities.

Wisconsin Public Service announced its decision to retire the last 2 units - Unit 7 (81.6 MW) and Unit 8 (149.6 MW) - at its J.P. Pulliam plant in Green Bay, WI. The plant will be shut down late 2018 to early 2019. Sustainable low gas prices, dramatic reduction in cost for renewable energy and stagnant demand have been cited as reasons for the closure. Fate of 46 employees is yet to be determined.

Colorado's largest utility company, Xcel Energy it will retire 660 megawatts of coal-generated power from Comanche Unit 1, built in 1973, and Comanche Unit 2, built in 1975. “It is really about the economics,” David Eves, president for Xcel Energy in Colorado, said of the retirements, which will take place before the end of 2022 and 2025.
